In deze lezing staat de kracht van de gemeenschap centraal. In de vakliteratuur en door vooruitstrevende bestuurders en beleidsmakers wordt de kracht van de gemeenschap erkend en omarmd als tegenkracht voor strategie en beleid die vanuit de systeemwereld centraal wordt gesteld.

Met het Masterplan Zuidoost als actueel praktijkvoorbeeld neemt Saundra Williams ons mee in de dynamiek tussen systeem- en leefwereld. Het Masterplan Zuidoost richt zich op de ontwikkeling van Amsterdam-Zuidoost als multifunctioneel stadsgebied, met een sterke focus op duurzaamheid, mobiliteit en sociale cohesie. Hoe krijgt de participatie van een gemeenschap vorm in ontwikkeling van beleid en wordt de behoefte van de community het leidend uitgangspunt?

Ama Koranteng Kumi zal haar visie op de stedelijke ontwikkeling in Zuidoost toelichten. Ze zal vertellen hoe zij met het kunstproject “The Gift of colour” een alternatieve vorm introduceert en zij andere waarden en normen centraal stelt om gemeenschapszin en participatie te bevorderen.

Saundra Williams studeerde Sociale Wetenschappen aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Zij heeft ruim 26 jaar ervaring in de maatschappelijke en culturele sector. De afgelopen jaren heeft zij diverse functies bekleedt als jongerenwerker, coach, trainer diversiteit en inclusie, manager bedrijfsvoering in het Bijlmer Parktheater, artistiek leider van de opleiding Productie Podiumkunsten bij de AHK en de afgelopen 2,5 jaar werkte zij als programmadirecteur voor het Masterplan ZO. In deze functie heeft zij zich geprofileerd als changemaker op het gebied van community-based werken als onderdeel van strategie en beleid binnen organisaties. Momenteel werkt zij als freelancer en in haar werk staat inclusie, coaching, innovatie en verandering centraal.

Ama Koranteng Kumi is founder van Bloei & Groei – een organisatie uit Amsterdam-Zuidoost die stadstuinen creëert die als healing, food en community garden dienen. Met inmiddels 7 (and counting!) healing en community gardens, een Bloei Academie en zo’n 30 werknemers is Bloei & Groei een bloeiende groen-organisatie die zich hard maakt voor de veerkracht van vrouwen met een sterke focus op superdiversiteit. Ama is ook professioneel actief in de kunst & cultuursector in Nederland en België. Als co-founder en artistiek directeur van MINO Art Space & Creative Agency maakt zij ruimte voor jonge, opkomende en grensverleggende kunstenaars.

Sprekers: Bas Kosters, Raven en Theater LeBelle

In het programma Kunst en Zorg van zorginstelling Cordaan werken professionele kunstenaars, theatermakers en ontwerpers samen met cliënten aan bijzondere artistieke producties. Tijdens deze lezing en workshop maak je kennis met verschillende projecten, initiatiefnemers en participanten.

Madelon van Riel is projectleider Cordaan programma Kunst & Zorg. Na de dansacademie, het dansen bij diverse gezelschappen en als dansmaker, vervult zij nu deze rol. In brede zin zet zij iedereen in beweging, letterlijk en figuurlijk.

Raven (Gerbrand Bos en Elike Roovers) gaan actief op zoek naar verhalen die nog niet of nauwelijks vertegenwoordigd zijn in het kunstenveld. En tonen daarmee de perspectieven die buiten ons blikveld vallen. Zij werken met groepen waar veel over gesproken wordt, maar die zelf weinig ruimte krijgen om zich uit te spreken.

Theater LeBelle is een theaterwerkplaats voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking. De spelers werken aan performances, voorstellingen, producties en locatietheater altijd in co-creatie met een kunstenaar uit de stad.

Bas Kosters handelt als kunstenaar en designer altijd vanuit bevlogenheid en compassie. Vanuit engagement creëert hij werelden bevolkt door vele uitbundige, alarmerende en tedere figuren. Daadkracht en enthousiasme zijn twee belangrijke termen die van toepassing zijn op al zijn verschillende bezigheden.

Ayse Somuncu houdt van mooie dingen, mode, maar ook van knuffels, disneyprinsessen en andere leuke figuren. Ze weet heel goed wat ze mooi vindt, lelijk of cool

Sprekers: Klasse Klima & Teresa Borasino

Part I
In the first talk the collective Klasse Klima will introduce their work. First, they will give insight in the collective organisation at Klasse Klima and the technical basis for communication, which is handled with the help of open source software. Second, the collective will take a look at Studium Planetare, a current large-scale project, which is based on the more than urgent need of an ongoing course program to tackle the multidimensional crisis. Klasse Klima is envisioning a complex program starting with several seminars and lecture series, which should establish a comprehensive ecological and sustainable education in every study program of the University of the Arts Berlin, as well as any other art school.

Part II
In the second talk, artist and activist Teresa Borasino will delve into her artistic practice, placing a primary emphasis on the ecological entanglements and ancestral wisdom of the Andes. She will contextualise her research within the framework of the collaborative project 'Towards Post-Extractive Cultures (TPEC),' which she convened earlier this year. TPEC serves as a platform for exploring the vast plurality of exiled ways of existence and forms of knowledge, all while facilitating the process of unlearning harmful patterns, habits, and narratives inherited from modern and colonial structures.

Klasse Klima is an open, autonomous and transdisciplinary collective. It communicates the climate crisis in art and design practice and education. Klasse Klima intervenes in educational politics and creates student-led seminars in art universities as well as organising workshops, residencies and exhibitions for art and design practitioners and the broader public. 

The collective was founded 2019 by students of University of the Arts, Berlin, to establish the confrontation with the climate crisis in art and design education. Klasse Klima wants to transform the current methods of hierarchical teaching and create a democratic, collaborative learning experience where responsibility and contributions are shared in the seminars and which should be accessible to everyone.

Teresa Borasino is an artist, researcher and educator born in Peru and based in Amsterdam. Her practice spans a variety of mediums, encompassing public interventions, performances, installations, soundscapes, and text. She seeks to contribute to the pluriversing of the world by cultivating a deeper understanding of the ecological and sacred entanglements experienced by exiled communities.

Borasino is a co-founder of Fossil Free Culture, an artist collective that operates at the intersection of art and climate justice. They have been confronting oil and gas sponsorship of public cultural institutions in the Netherlands since 2016. In 2021, Borasino embarked on artistic research into the Andean cosmovision and its tapestry of ancestral knowledge and ecological practices. In 2023, she convened the experimental platform 'Towards Post-Extractive Cultures'. She is currently a fellow researcher at the 2023/2024 BAK Fellowship for Situated Practice

Part 1 – Camille Sapara Barton
"In the Western world, grief is currently a taboo—something hidden, isolated and privatized from public space. However, in many indigenous and cultural contexts in the “global south” collective, embodied rituals are used to tend grief regularly. Given the collective loss and uncertainty we have faced since the pandemic, it is important to find ways to tend to grief so that we can be present with our emotions, reduce stagnation and cultivate the capacity to share our gifts with the world, to support the web of life. The Dagara elders Malidoma Somé and Sobonfu Somé shared a framework for tending to grief that can be supportive in these times. The Dagara approach, and their own lived experience of grief, inspired Camille Sapara Barton to write The GEN Grief Toolkit and Tending Grief: Embodied Rituals for Holding Our Sorrow and Growing Cultures of Care in Community (2024). Given that artists are tasked with representing the landscape of society, it is beneficial on a personal and professional level to engage with grief tending."

Camille Sapara Barton is a Social Imagineer who operates as a catalyst for social change, dedicated to creating networks of care and liveable futures. They work as an artist, facilitator, consultant and curator across the realms of embodied social justice, grief, pleasure and drug policy.

Rooted in Black feminism, ecology and harm reduction, Camille uses creativity, alongside embodied practices, to create culture change in fields ranging from psychedelic assisted therapy to arts education.

In 2022, Camille launched The GEN Grief Toolkit - a collection of embodied grief rituals to support personal and community grief work. They are currently based in Amsterdam, where they recently finished working as the Director of Ecologies of Transformation; a temporary masters programme at Sandberg Institute, researching how art making and embodiment can create social change.

Part 2 – Staci Bu Shea
For this presentation, Staci Bu Shea shares about their long term project Dying Livingly, a heightened period of study within the first few years of Bu Shea's holistic death care practice. The project manifests in a forthcoming publication (Sternberg Press, 2024) as a series of propositions and encounters, yearning and undone, in service to an aesthetic and poetic experience of living life led by death. Dying Livingly focuses on the material cultures and sociality of end of life spaces and reaches toward a future of compassionate, community-centered death care.

Staci Bu Shea (b. Miami, 1988) is a curator, writer, and holistic death care worker based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Broadly, Bu Shea focuses on aesthetic and poetic practices of social reproduction and care work, as well as its manifestations in interpersonal relationships and daily life, community organizing and institutional practice. Their debut publication Dying Livingly is released with Sternberg Press in 2024. They currently teach at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Bu Shea was curator at Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons (Utrecht, 2017-2022). With Carmel Curtis, they co-curated Barbara Hammer: Evidentiary Bodies at Leslie Lohman Museum of Art (New York City, 2017). Bu Shea holds an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (2016)
