‘Broadcasting from Babylon’ is a public programme that focuses on intersectional feminist, queer and anti-colonial embodied listening and sounding practices. The gatherings mostly take place at independent initiatives throughout the city of Amsterdam and at DAS Graduate School, from 21 January to 15 March 2019.
The programme consists of formal and informal public learning situations such as workshops, walks, seminars, bike rides, boat rides, reading groups, de-colonial consciousness-raising groups, dance moves and parties. All events are open to the public. Entrance is free.
Digs up, confronts, works through, and sits
The program Broadcasting from Babylon digs up, confronts, works through, and sits with the local Amsterdam, the Dutch, and the European imperial and colonial histories. How do these violent histories inescapably shape societies, social relations and our local contexts in the present day? What does it mean to live in the afterlife of these histories? Broadcasting from Babylon attunes itself to counter movements, side steppers, signal tricksters, code switchers, dance moves, body politics, decolonial, anti-racist, feminist and queer of color poetics and politics.
Broadcasting from Babylon is a DAS Theatre educational project organized by Maria Guggenbichler and Amal Alhaag as a thematic block for and with students Janis Balodis, Nahuel Cano, Jimmy Grima, Maria Kozlowska, Akram Lateef, Matar Pershitz, Merel Smitt, Felizitas Stilleke and Gosia Wdowik.

About Maria Guggenbichler and Amal Alhaag
DAS Theatre has invited Maria Guggenbichler and Amal Alhaag to mentor the block 'Broadcasting from Babylon’ for the academic year 2018-2019. Maria Guggenbichler and Amal Alhaag initiated and ran together the Side Room, an informal platform for ex-centric cultural practices and thinking, in Amsterdam (2013-2016). Next to the Side Room and since its closure, they have collaborated on events, programs and pranks, together with a network of international and local collaborators and befriended experts, academics, artists, activists and initiatives.
