Catarina Vieira (b. 1983; Aveiro, Portugal) is a theatremaker and performer based in Lisbon whose work articulates different artistic fields, such as theatre, performance, cinema and video. Her main area of work is Identity, Desire and Power. Vieira believes that there is no other reality than desire. How can one survive the action of power over desire? How can one react to being the ghost of someone else’s desire? What is the relationship between desire and fiction? She frequently works on the concept of representation in order to question, expose and reflect on the mechanisms of production of Truth, Knowledge, Identity and Power. Vieira is attracted to theatre as a mechanism of disclosure, of articulation between the visible and the invisible, constantly reframing and recreating the possibilities of the obscene.
Vieira studied Theatre at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema (Lisbon), graduating in 2007. She has worked mostly in partnership with the performer and theatremaker Solange Freitas and, since 2007, they have created together the following theatre shows, being responsible for the directing, acting, text, set design and production: Go Tell Fire To The Mountain (2015); Ex Machina (2014); Bugs (2013); Festim - do fim das coisas nada sabemos (in partnership with the performer and theatre maker Tiago Cadete, 2012); Fora de Jogo (2011); Temporária (2010); Lá e Cá (one of the winners of Artistas Jovens Program, 2007). These creations were regularly programmed at the Festival Temps d’Images in Lisbon.
