Roos van Berkel
Roos van Berkel is a choreographer and dance researcher. She trained at Trinity Laban in London (BA Hons Dance Theatre) and then in New York City at the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies and the Merce Cunningham Studio. In Europe, she has worked as a dancer in Cologne and Amsterdam, among other places. She also created a full-length duet with choreographer Gyula Berger in Budapest.
In addition, Roos has developed as an interdisciplinary maker with a focus on science and technology. Her work as a teacher and researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology was a springboard for, among other things, a duet with a humanoid robot and an interactive light installation. From 2016, she has been creating work in the field of art and technology within the Amsterdam performance collective NOW, and since 2019 Roos has collaborated with mathematician Tom Verhoeff on the series “Lehmer's Dance.
Van Berkel has taught part-time at the ATD and the TU/e (Faculty of Industrial Design) since 2008. At the ATD she has taught 12 years in the Modern Theatre Dance program, 5 years in the Dance Teacher program and now 3 years in the Expanded Contemporary Dance program. She also published research on dance and the elderly in 2020 and has been a member of the Embodied Knowledge research group since 2019.
Van Berkel creates and produces her own work, made possible by Stimuleringsfonds, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst and Fonds Podiumkunsten, among others. Her work has been co-produced by festivals and organizations such as STRP festival, Discovery festival, the Dutch Mathematics Days and Platform Wiskunde Nederland.
