"How to spell the fight" by Natascha Sadr Haghighian

On 20 January 2019 Natascha Sadr Haghighian held a guest lecture at DAS Graduate School titled:

How to spell the fight

Making string figures is a universal practice that goes back to the prehistory of humankind. While anthropologists and ethnologists in the beginning of the 20th century considered them “prelogical”, the interdisciplinary ethnomathematics, founded in the 1970s, looks at them as a visuospatial mathematical activity. In oral societies, practices of weaving and pattern making are looked at as mathematics.

How to Spell the Fight follows a thread that has been running through our fingers from centuries past till the present day – morphing from the tangible string figures that joined our hands in childhood, to the more elusive computational threads that engage our fingers today.
