Spring Awakening

Being at the age of developing identity and sexuality, teenagers are in the most tumultuous stage of their lives when it comes to exploring themselves and others. During this journey a lot can go wrong. What happens if you’ve never been allowed to explore where your boundaries lie, or how to respect those of others?

Raising teenagers is hard. But if adults mess up, the consequences can be tragic. Perhaps it is impossible to fully prepare a child for what awaits them in life? Spring Awakening shows just how lost young adults can get in the labyrinth that is teenagehood; full of social pressure, identity crises and sexual confusion. With a constant feeling of being watched, the youngsters find themselves trapped in the system that the older generation has built for them, resulting in awkward and traumatising situations.

Frank Wedekind wrote his famously controversial play Spring Awakening, which was made into a musical more than a decade later, to present to the audience what can happen as a result of poor communication between adults and children. This adapation of the play takes Wedekind’s 1891 teenagers and their struggles to 2022 in a fresh mixture between play and musical theatre.

Spring Awakening is a graduation piece by Igor Cugat, Rae Elstak, Wim Wildenbeest and Isha Plug.
