The Design & Technology study programme trains you to become an important member of a creative team that produces festivals, theatrical productions, exhibitions and other media projects. You are schooled as designer, inventor and organiser. You learn how to develop your own or someone else’s artistic ideas, how to translate them into technical plans and ultimately how to realise an actual production.

Contribute to the creative process

Events are a universal phenomenon that have many different forms: major festivals, theatre productions, exhibitions or television programmes. From an up-and-coming band in a small  club to the livestream of a world-famous DJ. It doesn’t matter what kind of event it is; you will always have to make something that didn’t previously exist. The Design & Technology study programme trains you how to carry out the technical realisation of such a project and also teaches you to think about the form and contents of what you make.

Design and Technology is the only study programme in this specialist field at HBO level in the Netherlands. This is because the study programme is aimed firstly at training students to become technical supervisors while they also contribute actively to the creative process. The study programme offers you the choice between various graduation majors or specializations: lighting design, sound design and technical production. These will commence in your second year.
The Academy for Theatre and Dance is home to a total of 13 bachelor study programmes and a Technical Production – Associate Degree course. This ensures that even at an early stage of your study, you can collaborate intensively with students from other study programmes to realize productions and create art. In this environment everyone is still busy learning, so there is plenty of opportunity for experimentation and trial and error. Besides classrooms and studios, the academy also has three theatres while IDlab offers students the latest digital and technological possibilities.

Accreditation and degree

The bachelor's programme in Technical Theatre Arts is a track within the Bachelor Theatre. The quality of this programme has been positively assessed by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). Only accreditated degree programmes are listed in the Dutch central register of higher education programmes (CROHO).
