Contextual Spring 2011

Every spring semester Das Arts stages a ‘Contextual’, a short and intensive education programme conceived and designed by students. It is just one of the ways in which DasArts gives shape to the notion of ‘question-based learning’.

Every student reflects upon the question: what interests all of us currently in art practice? Which personal fascination, practice, knowledge can I share with my colleagues and in what way? This serves to challenge students to broaden their horizons and create a learning environment that is stimulating for themselves as well as the group as a whole.

Everybody submits a proposal. The different proposals are explained, everyone gives their verdict and bearing in the mind the students’ preferences, the educational team decides on the definite contents for the programme. During Spring Semester 2011 the proposal by DasArts student Mala Kine was selected: dramaturge and performance artist Robert Steijn (NL) was invited as the main guest.

Mala Kline: "The way Robert switched quickly between embodiment and reflection on stage, questioning presence and imagination, watching and being watched, openness and projection. He was opening up the mechanics at work in the here and now."

The programme took place on location. The group took up residence in a cottage 'Juffertje in het groen', in Onstwedde, Groningen.
