This upcoming event has a focus to support current students and future paths to equity within Dutch education, and particularly in addressing the increasing disparity between the very high tuition fees paid by students from outside the EU/EER compared to the much lower rate for students from within that region. This event builds on two previous such initiatives put forward by ATD Lectorate and OC DAS (October 2023 & 2024).
With our starting point being an understanding of education as a basic right that needs to be available and accessible for everyone...
We support initiatives that speak directly to students, gather with people who have their own lived experiences as non-EU students, and find ways to sustain their lives within educational institutions and beyond. We bring ideas around a Single Fee tuition model with Fernando Belfiore, strategies and knowledge from recent and current non-EU students Doga, Anllel, Saman, and acknowledge resiliencies with an open ritual with Dwayne Toemere. The event is for everyone, current and future students, teachers, and staff; and everyone who thinks education and equity walk together, and are seeking ways to equalize the asymmetries of contemporary times.
The evening will include:
Dwayne Toemere - Researcher ATD Lectorate • Program coördinator for Platform 2025/Diversity, Equity & InclusionAn opening ritual with the intention to create a moment of collective presence before the conversation begins. Acknowledging the weight of the topic, the courage it takes to gather, and the strength that already exists within this community.
Doga and Anllel - students of the 4th year in SNDO Will speak on supporting each other to fund their tuition fees through hosting events such as dinners, workshops, screenings, readings, artisanal fairs, and other proposals of collective care. They will share on both the context of their reality as non-EU student workers, and practical tools and strategies they have been gathering/using to sustain themselves and each other in the recent years.
Saman - alumnus of SNDO 2024 Saman offers a list of fundings received while studying and the functions of them, how to write an application, and also share regarding the process after graduation with IND, the cultural sector, and layers for the artist visa process.
Single Fee - Fernando Belfiore With the increase in fees at educational institutions and a new law project threatening to establish (even) higher fees for students from outside the European Union, we strive for ATD to have the autonomy to choose their fees, to voice their concerns, and to resist. The new law, which has not yet passed, and the decision to increase fees for non-EU/EEA students functions to exclude those invited to the institution, by creating a financial barrier that is too high, resulting in disparity, stress, and dissonance within the academy and its discourses. We propose a single fee tuition structure.
