Programme DAS Theatre

Samara Hersch

Body of Knowledge

Body of Knowledge is a creative collaboration between a group of teenagers and a team of artists, initiated and directed by theatre-maker Samara Hersch. The project explores how to have complex conversations about sex and the body in ways that are empowering, driven by real curiosity, including questions of boundaries, shame, healing, consent, pleasure, ageing…

Samara Hersch is a theatre-maker from Melbourne, whose practice explores the intersection of contemporary performance and community engagement. She often works with both professional and non-professionally trained performers as a way of opening up new conversations, methodologies and unlikely, intimate encounters. She has a curiosity about voice, sound and the ethics and potentialities of creating space for diverse perspectives to be heard. Previously, Samara has worked with a range of theatre companies in Australia including Back to Back Theatre, Chamber Made Opera, Malthouse and Arts House.

Ira Brand

Ways To Submit

Ways To Submit is an exploration of dominance and submission. How we give in, how we take control: physically, psychologically, sexually, socially. Through language, through the body, and through structures of power.

Ira has been trying to understand: What can a consensual, agreed, playing in these dynamics offer us? How might we practice other ways of relating to each other? What are the intersections between personal and political consent? And who has the privilege to ‘play’?

A fantasy, a game, a performance, a fight: a series of duets in which power is at work.

Ira is a German-born and UK-raised artist, writer, performance-maker and curator. She studied Theatre with Textual Practices at Dartington College of Arts, graduating in 2007. She creates live interdisciplinary performances, and her process is one of using the personal to speak to wider social, political, and formal concerns. Her work draws on text, video, auto/biography, found material, research and interview processes, and physical practices, exploring a language of the untrained body. A current thematic preoccupation in her work is power and how it is felt and enacted – specifically through language, gender and desire. Her work aims to be evocative, intimate, funny, and visceral: to create a space for criticality, for multiplicity, for asking questions, and for re-imagining.

Annefleur Schep

IOOTCP – Cultural Night on the topic of Polish Ethnographer Bronislaw Malinowski

I would love to be Polish. Two men have talked me into bed by asking me if I was Polish. Nothing flatters me more than being perceived as Polish. G. has told me twice now that I could pass as a Polish woman and it gives me a warm feeling in my stomach and chest and makes my cheeks glow. The day before yesterday I made a slip of the tongue. I proposed to M. and G. to go on a walk, a walk exclusively for Polish girls. Luckily, they didn't hear what I was saying. Halfway through the sentence I realised what I was about to say and lowered the volume of my voice. My slip was that for a second I had actually thought that I was Polish too; I considered myself one of them. And then immediately I was thrown back into reality.

Annefleur Schep (Rotterdam, 1983) is a theatremaker and performer from The Netherlands. She completed her studies at the University of Amsterdam (BA Theatre Studies) and at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (BA Acting) and is about to finish her MA at DAS Theatre.

Through writing and performing she attempts to figure out how authority is being performed and how images of the Other are being created and propagated. Her strategy is to imitate. She makes distorted copies of images, words, branding and behaviour displayed by politicians, institutes and corporations. She presents her deformed copies through the persona of an untrustworthy authorithy; a naive, fanatic figure that dedicates her life to the propagation of a tunnelvision based on rigorous and emotional simplifications of reality.

Ana Vilela da Costa

Like tears in rain

I have memories. You have memories too. But let’s try to put our personal memories aside for an instant and attempt to create one memory, a sensorial moment… together.

Can you tell where it started? Where did it end? When did the memory stop being a reminiscence of the past and start feeling like a prediction or a prophecy? I invite you to enter this space and find the pieces that are part of this story.

Ana Vilela da Costa (b. 1984, Lisbon) is an actress and a theatre-maker. She holds an MA in Theatre – Performing Arts (ESTC, 2014) and a BA in Cultural Anthropology (ISCSP, 2008). She works in theatre as well as in cinema.

As a maker, Ana Vilela da Costa is interested in the boundaries and thresholds between reality and fiction. She is allured by the creation of alternative realities and detachments between time and space. Her work is a multidisciplinary practice intertwining performative arts and video installation as ways of addressing concepts of memory and fiction through the usage of real documents and archival materials. Her practice explores theatre’s formal and conceptual frameworks, often attempting to exhaust such predicaments.

Rodrigo Batista

The B-side

Rodrigo Batista is a theatre-maker, performer and educator. He spent ten years developing collaborative and interdisciplinary methodologies with his group [pH2]: estado de teatro in São Paulo, notably in theatre, dance, cinema and art education. In 2016, he led colleagues and students in an art educators’ strike, opposing financial cuts for public art programmes on the outskirts of São Paulo. Once the strike ended, they were dismissed for political reasons. During these last two years at DAS, he has developed a research around despair and insurrection.

Rodrigo developed "The Furious Rodrigo Batista", a double-sided opus performance accompanied by several scenic and writing experiments. During the development of these works and using his body as locus, Rodrigo expanded explicitness into an aesthetic flowing from straightforward language to gore and pornographic visuality, to decolonization as a process of violence, all within an intense body research made from impulses of iconoclasm, indigestion, mutilation, blood and sex.

Brogan Davison

The Brogan Davison Show (Extravaganza!)

The Brogan Davison Show is a solo stand-up performance that plays with the vulnerable relationship between a performer and their audience. Standing alone onstage Brogan Davison - a socially awkward, mentally-fragile English woman - reveals her more unflattering sides in a perhaps desperate attempt to give the performance of a lifetime. As hilarious as it is sincere, this event is a grandiose, naive and absurd attempt of a lonely human to connect to world and the people within it.

Brogan Davison is a choreographer and performance-maker from the UK. Brogan graduated from the Dance Theatre programme at Laban in London in 2010. That same year she then moved to Iceland, where she met her long-term collaborator, Pétur Ármannsson, later forming the award-winning collaboration Dance For Me with him. Located within the field of real fiction, their work explores the relationship of a lived life and its representation, and tackles questions that arise from the act of staging a ‘self’ through their trademark vulnerable and off-key approach to performance-making.

Ingrid Vranken

Rooted Hauntology Lab / Séance #1

Rooted Hauntology Lab invites plants, artists, thinkers and audiences to ‘be-with’ each other, to contemplate our planetary co-existence. Rooted Hauntology Lab commits to ‘thinking-with’ the trouble, by acknowledging that human knowledge alone is not enough. Our photosynthetic colleagues include decorative exotic plants, carnivorous plants and common kitchen herbs. Our practices attempt to go beyond gardening or an exploitative aesthetic objectification, and question our politics of relation, both towards the other-than-human and human others.

Ingrid Vranken completed Theatre Studies at the University of Antwerp and Freie Universität Berlin. She has worked as a dramaturg, producer and curator for multiple artists and arts organizations in Flanders. Ingrid is a member of FoAM, a transdisciplinary laboratory for speculative cultures. Her research focusses on new collaborative, curatorial and dramaturgical models and a wider ecological and post-capitalist transition that include other-than-humans.

Max Gadow

Liquid Ecstasy

Liquid Ecstasy is an allegorical performance-essay that explores the possibilities of returning to a primordial state of fluid equality amongst all life forms. It is an exploration of the relation between humans and the fluids that surround and perfuse them. It reveals the Dutch people’s inherited fear of water and their obsession to tame and contain it. It is a ritualistic offering to liquidity through the transformation of the self in hope of a fluid future and a devotion to oceanic feelings.

Max Gadow (b. 1989) is an artist and theatre-maker from Germany. He lives and works in Berlin, where he as a member of virtuellestheater. Max has a background and education in theatre directing, but he has gradually shifted his focus from the traditional theatre field to performative installations and performance, putting an emphasis on the social and cultural construction of neoliberal societies in the digital era. Throughout his work, the internet serves as a performative partner for the creation and presentation of his work.

Melih Gençboyacı

The Embassy series – a continuing research in politics, rituals, and curation

The Embassy of Future Citizenship and The New Embassy of Turkey (the Embassy series) have been developed as Melih Gençboyacı’s degree project in Extended Curation. During his studies, Melih has been drawn to the notion of ‘embodied resistance’ at the intersection of art, politics and spirituality. He is interested in the relationship between ritual practices and political identifications, and experiments with creating contexts for their entanglement. Through his research, Melih seeks to address these key questions: How can a curatorial practice create agency and engagement in the audience? How can a political understanding of the body be instrumental in proposing a new identification? These questions require him to think about the body as a site of everyday resistance, and about the potential of curatorial practice as a testing ground for the new embodiments that emerge.

Melih Gençboyacı is an artist, curator, and Hatha Yoga teacher. He studied acting at Dokuz Eylül University in Turkey. Later, he studied at the Mime department of Academy of Dance and Theatre in the Netherlands. Since 2008, he has founded two collectives of uncompromising, sweaty, and trustful collaborations: Schwalbe and Copycats. He is finishing his Master’s degree at Das Theatre’s Extended Curation programme. His curatorial research is focused on creating alternative realities to challenge existing political structures.

Billy Mullaney

Never Never Never Ever Never Never Ever Never Ever Ever EVER Ever EVER Give Up Unless It Gets Too Hard

Never Never Never Ever Never Never Ever Never Ever Ever EVER Ever EVER Give Up Unless It Gets Too Hard is a durational performance consisting of the filming of a promotional trailer for another theatrical performance. Witnesses to the process are invited to enter, observe, enjoy a snack, and leave whenever they like. NNNENNENEEEEEGUUIG2H follows Sianne Ngai's "Theory of the Gimmick" as an organizational principle, updating the arch logic of Villiers de l'Isle-Adam's "Glory Machine" for the digital age, to produce what Slavoj Žižek calls an "over-orthodox" conformity with contemporary standards of success in our neoliberal hellscape. Other promotional materials and markers of so-called cultural capital are also made on-site, such as critical reviews, advert posters, and prizes which the theatrical performance has won.

Billy Mullaney (USA) is an Amsterdam-based artist working in theatre, choreography, and performance art. His research focuses on representational practices in and of various sites of performance, the modes of spectatorship they conventionally engender, and how interventions in the former affect the latter. By rigorously embodying such interventions, Billy's work often foregrounds the physiological impact of movement and thought on the body, indexing the stakes of adhering too closely (or too successfully) to logics such as the attention economy or post-fordist production. This research has led him to experiment with forms ranging from quantum physics lectures and children's television shows to Broadway musicals and tarot readings. He has performed nationally and internationally as a solo artist as well as with frequent collaborator Emily Gastineau (USA) under the name Fire Drill. Billy is an artist in residence at WOW Amsterdam; he is a lecturer, mathematics instructor, and an actor.
