Masterclass Creating Low-Stimulus Theater

How can we create theater that is not only artistically powerful, but also accessible to people with heightened sensitivity to stimuli?

The ATD Lectoraat of the Academy of Theater and Dance is entering into a partnership with Stichting Onbeperkt Genieten, a pioneer in the field of low-stimulus cultural offerings. This collaboration is directly in line with the research on social justice and access in the Lectoraat, which focuses on value-driven practical research in performance. It is part of our larger research program, Arts beyond Ableism': https://www.atd.ahk.nl/atd-lectoraat/projecten/arts-beyond-ableism/

A first concrete step in this collaboration is to draw attention to the Masterclass Low-Stimulus Theater Making: a unique learning pathway for theater makers and students who want to deepen and broaden their artistic practice.

Why this masterclass?

The masterclass offers:

  • Insight into stimulus processing and the target group

  • Guidelines and best practices for low-stimulus theater

  • The development of your own short performance

  • Coaching and feedback from experts

  • The opportunity to obtain the ‘Low-stimulus Checked’ certificate

The masterclass is suitable as an elective, module, or in-depth course within study programs and ties in seamlessly with current developments in arts education and cultural policy.

A brochure with more information about the content and structure of the masterclass is available on request.

Connection with practice

As a researcher affiliated with the ATD research group, Dwayne Toemere has previously been involved with Stichting Onbeperkt Genieten (Unlimited Enjoyment Foundation) through the performance Tussenmensen (2024), developed in collaboration with the Jakop Ahlbom Company. This artistic practical experience forms a substantive bridge between research, education, and performance.

With this partnership, we want to invite educational institutions, students, and staff to actively contribute to a more inclusive theater field.
