In view of the ongoing corona restrictions, we have decided to organise our end-of-year production Dancers of Tomorrow differently to previous years. Unfortunately, we cannot invite an audience to the performance. However, we do want to give our pupils and students the opportunity to perform on the big stage of Dutch National Opera & Ballet. Particularly after all the restrictions of the past year and a half, it is something they can look forward to and be inspired by. The pupils and students will perform in works that are created especially for this edition of Dancers of Tomorrow. A recording of the performance will be made available to the public via streaming. The same applies to the Dutch National Ballet Academy’s film contribution to the online edition of be-CONNECTED, the annual festival of the Academy of Theatre and Dance.
In this edition of Dancers of Tomorrow, our youngest pupils (NBA 1-4) will perform a new world dance piece, choreographed by teacher Iva Lešić. Teacher Grigori (Grisha) Tchitcherine is creating a character piece for the NBA 5 and 6 pupils, and choreographer and principal dancer with Dutch National Ballet, Remi Wörtmeyer, is making a new work for the NBA 7 pupils.
The higher professional education students will perform in various works, most of which are created especially for this edition of Dancers of Tomorrow. Artistic director Ernst Meisner is choreographing a big classical work for all the higher professional education students. The Associate Degree students will dance a section from If we could only even if we could, an early work by the renowned Dutch choreographers’ duo Andrea Leine and Harijono Roebana (see further on in this newsletter). The programme also includes new works by choreographer Juanjo Arqués and teacher Amy Raymond, both performed by the BA students. And a number of solos will be shown from the most recent edition of the Choreographic Project. These were choreographed by some of our students and have been developed further since they were premiered in December.
The recordings of Dancers of Tomorrow 2021 will take place in Dutch National Opera & Ballet, from 1 to 4 July. The streaming date of the performance will be announced later on our website.
All the preparations for Dancers of Tomorrow will be recorded in an extensive making-of film by dancer and filmmaker Thomas van Damme (former dancer with the Junior Company and now with Staatsballett Berlin). The film will form part of the online be-CONNECTED festival of the Academy of Theatre and Dance, which will take place from 25 to 30 June.
