DAS Master Presentation: / 70/ Cipher by Hyoung-Min Kim

[Translate to English:] DAS Master Presentation: '암호/ 70/ Cipher' by Hyoung-Min Kim

Published on

At the culmination of her masters research with DAS Choreography, Hyoung-Min Kim shares her work in the presentation of '/ 70/ Cipher'. We warmly invite you to join.

How are censorship and self-censorship embodied through the body? This question drives Hyoung-Min Kim (DAS Choreography) into diverse research practices. In this presentation, she shares two parts of her research.

- 70
70, is an imaginary number inspired by Personal Space, by Edward Hall. 70 cm is a trajectory between intimate space and personal space. It is a symbol of invasion of intimate space and protection of personal space. It contains two states: protection and invasion. 70 cm is also the approximate distance that the artist Ai Weiwei was continuously observed by guards during a detention of 91 days.

Here Hyoung-min Kim finds a common character within censorship, which performs not only for the purpose of protection of society, but also the invasion of privacy.

She applies the concept of 70 to the body, as a principle of movement, and examines what emerges.
What happens if we limit movement within the notion of 70?

- Letter
She shares a personal letter to her uncle, which was written under strong self-censorship.
It reveals a process of confronting self-censorship in herself.
