Nine graduation projects have been selected for the AHK Graduation Prize 2016. Alumnus Asher Lev (DAS Choreography) is nominated for his project OutOf aiR. The winner will receive a cash prize of €3,000. In addition, you will shortly be able to vote for the winner of the Audience Award, who will receive a cash prize of €1,000.

Important criteria upon which the jury evaluates the entries, in addition to them having been assessed as very good, include the way in which a connection is made with the outside world in the graduation project, and the relevance of the work for the further development of the profession.

Asher Lev: “My graduation project is rooted in a three year interest and investment in experimental somatic practices with a specific concentration around the act of breathing. Treating air as a performative medium and engaging in its social politics is unique to my project. I can imagine how other performance works could further relate to gases and bodies and the sociality of our environment. OutOf aiR is a participatory work and one of the main questions it poses is, how do we breathe together. One of the mechanisms for inducing/encouraging participation is of a particular kind – necessity.”

Jeroen Fabius, artistic director DAS Choreography: “This is a piece about scale, detail, and the intimate space of the breath in the body. This piece is about feeling the body. This work presents the spectator with many moments to decide how to relate, it is both a playful as a confronting work of art. The work is confronting questions of life and death, of drowning, of witnessing and of participation. The work is dealing with existential human matters, it also raises questions of sharing responsibility and community. Asher Lev and Irina Lavrinovic have made an exceptional work that leaves a strong impression with the spectator that one does not easily forget.”
