Composer and director Heiner Goebbels has challenged the boundaries and deconstructed the assumptions embedded in the performance arts for the past 30 years.

His performances play with the audience’s senses and suggest new ways of looking at the world, weaving a complex web of sound, music, literature, sociology, and the fine arts. Having worked together with many theatre practitioners and artists such as Heiner Müller and Magdalena Jetelova, and with groups and orchestras such as the Hilliard Ensemble, the Berlin Philarmonic, and Asko/Schönberg, he has also been active in performance education: amongst others as a professor at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen, the Hessian Theatre Academy, and as the artistic director of the Ruhrtriennale. In 2018 he received the first appointment for the recently established Georg Büchner-Chair from the President of the Justus-Liebig University.

On the 10th of January, Heiner Goebbels will perform ‘Industry and Idleness’ and other ensemble compositions at the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam. Before the concert, however, he will speak about his ‘Aesthetics of Absence’ at our own Academy of Theatre and Dance during ‘HALf6’!

This Half6 is presented by the Theatre Direction department, in collaboration with the Composition department from Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
