HALf6 Special - Opera Forward Talk #4 Chantal Mouffe

Talk #4: Affects and Agonistic Politics: The Role of Artistic Practices

Tuesday 23 February 2016, from 17.30 to 19.00 hrs.
De Theaterschool, Jodenbreestraat 3, Amsterdam
Moderator: Liesbeth Levy

Political philosopher Chantal Mouffe has received world-wide acclaim for her radical and innovative view of democracy. While contemporary politics is geared especially towards achieving consensus, Mouffe defends the importance of discord. Her theory of agonistic pluralism stresses that ideological conflicts should not be denied but given free rein.

Today there is a strong need for contrary voices according to Mouffe. Artists can play a crucial role in filling that void because critical art makes us aware that there are indeed alternatives.

‘I can’t stress enough the role of passion in politics and society. In their convictions, citizens are swayed not only by rational and moral values but also by passion.’- Chantal Mouffe
