Sofia Ornellas Pinto

Sofia danced ballet for 20 years and found that becoming a physiotherapist was the most fulfilling way to keep working in the dance industry. Through a MSc in Dance Science (Trinity Laban, 2012) Sofia was inspired to partner science and artistry. She has since published, presented internationally, taught and, above all, had the pleasure to work daily with performers.

By working and teaching in conservatoires, universities and companies, Sofia has been driven to see "the bigger picture" and has, since 2020, occupied roles of management within educational and professional dance organizations. Here, Sofia developed and implemented screening protocols and adequate individually follow-up, devised repertoire-specific conditioning through the season and delivered seminars for dancers and dance teachers exploring individualized exercises and training methodologies.

Now, in the Netherlands, Sofia has pursued a second MSc in High Performance (De Vrije Universiteit, 2022) while teaching at the ATD and guest lecturing in other institutions. In November 2022, Sofia became Coordinator of Health and Performance at the ATD.

In parallel, Sofia guest-lectures in the University of Human Kinetics (Lisbon) concerning screening and data collection ethics, purpose and protocols, and works regularly 1:1 with rheumatological patients in pain management through movement. She is also a Pilates teacher in a small studio in Utrecht.

Sofia's research interests lie in motor learning and fitness for the performing artist. Currently Sofia is exploring the concept of exhaustion and purposeful rest as part of education.
