Venuri Perera is a choreographer, performance artist, curator and educator from Colombo. Since 2017 she has been exploring the power dynamics of gaze, anonymity, sensuality, and intimacy through performative experiments in public space, theaters and galleries.Her solo works have dealt with violent nationalism, patriarchy, border rituals, colonial heritage, and class. They were shown in festivals and biennales across Europe, South and East Asia including Zürcher Theater Spektakel, Art Basel, SIFA Singapore, TPAM Yokohama, Dhaka Art Summit, Asia Triennial Manchester. She has collaborated closely with choreographers Zwoisy Mears Clarke (Porcelain White, a film, co production Theaterformen, Goethe-Institut) Geumhyung Jeong (Zürcher Theater Spektakel) Natsuko Tezuka (Saison Foundation, Kyoto Experiment) and Gerda Konig. Her recent theatre collaborations were with Teater Garasi Indonesia and Sankar Venkateswaran. Venuri was curator of the programmes of Colombo Dance Platform since 2016. Trying to create conditions for radical love in her work and life but mostly failing, she remains optimistic.
