Abhishek Thapar is a theatre maker, performer, puppeteer and teacher from India. He holds a post-graduate degree in Creating Theatre and Performance from the London International School of Performing Arts (UK).
Thapar has worked extensively as a performer and creator in Asia and Europe with various companies i.e. The Primetime Theatre Co. (Mumbai), IAPAR (Pune), Flame School of Performing Arts (Pune), Hrishikesh Centre of Contemporary Dance (Pune), Mirror-Mirror Theatre Co. (London), Terra Nova Productions (Belfast), Flinntheater (Berlin).
In 2013, he founded the theatre company Three Ring Circus, where as an artistic director, he has developed two projects: The E-Story and #kthanksbye. Simultaneously, he has been performing in productions The Balancing Act by IAPAR and Krishna’s Elite by Flinntheater. Both productions have toured at theatre festivals and venues in India, Sri Lanka and Germany.
Thapar is one of the core-founding members of International Association for Performing Arts and Research (IAPAR) and International Theatre Institute (ITI, India Centre) based in Pune. Pedagogically, he creates theatre programs for colleges and universities across India i.e. Symbiosis School of Liberal Arts (SSLA), Foundation for Liberal Arts and Management Education (FLAME), Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM, Bangalore).
I plan to continue my practice as an autonomous maker and slowly creating my base in Amsterdam.
My home at the Intersection
When I was growing up, my parents always told me, ‘There is a big storm coming, we might have to leave’. Since then, Amsterdam is the 13th city I have lived in, and it’s only now that I begin to ask myself, what makes a home? How does one deal with memories and conflicting histories? For the last one year, I have been working with certain historical narratives of Punjab, a state in the northwest part of India and of my family, our life there as well. ‘My home at the Intersection’ is a work, which I have been growing towards since I first started making theatre in my teens but could never gain courage to actualize it. In December last year, I went back to my childhood home in Moga with my family, to a place, which we all thought we had forgotten about. Together we created a performance.
