Theatre yearbook 2017/2018

Theatermaker and NIT (2018)

The 62nd edition of the theatre yearbook has been published. Traditionally, the 'almanac' for the performing arts reflects on the most important developments of the past theatre season. This year's focus is 'off road' theatre, or so-called theatrical phenomena that normally exist beyond the view of institutes, reviewers and databases.

The 2017/2018 Theatre Yearbook consists of two parts. The first reflects on the 'regular' theater field, with articles about the most important developments of the past season, such as the emergence of fair practice and creative producing, the radical approach to the stage canon and the testimonials about abuse of power in the performing arts under #MeToo. In addition, the artistic legacy of Pierre Audi and Jan Ritsema is examined.

In the second part, the view is broadened with a series of reports about 'off road' theatre. From a curiosity about non-canonized, informal theater forms, the field is explored beyond the well-known, allotted, asphalted theater. Writers were sent to LARPs, kiki balls, corporate shows and a real-life game.

The Theatre Yearbook, set up in 1952 by Luisa Treves, was originally an overview of all the performances of the season, but it gradually developed into a critical annual overview with reflection and debate. (The production details are now available on the Theatrical Encyclopedia). The tradition of the Theatre Yearbook disappeared for four years when the Theatre Institute Netherlands (TIN) stopped in 2013. However, the tradition was revived again by 'Theatermaker' and working group NIT, an group of people and institutions involved in heritage, reflection and debate in the performing arts.
