De taal van de toeschouwer (Dutch only)

Tobias Kokkelmans, Marieke Dijkwel, Simone van Hulst (2017)

Where do you hear the spectator's language? The moments we can hear this language are scarce. How does the spectator speak about art? If the spectator speaks, do we listen?

Local School-researcher Tobias Kokkelmans, educator Marieke Dijkwel and programmer Simone van Hulst write about an upcoming phenomenon in the performing arts: art appreciation by spectators.

How can the spectator express their experience? Which space they be allocated and what space can they claim? How can art professionals facilitate this space in a good way? Why is that space valuable? What significance does this shift have? Are old power relations disrupted?

This research was conducted in the context of the research group Local School, part of DAS Research (the research group of the Academy of Theater and Dance, Amsterdam School of the Arts). The publication is not only aimed at art professionals, but to anyone who loves looking at art and enjoys to talk about it.
