In the lecture series ‘Vision’ of the master DAS Creative Producing in collaboration with Adyen, Marie-Anne Leuty and Sumi Anjuman will give a lecture about their work on Sunday, May 15 at 11.00h-13.00h. In this May lecture we will focus on art and community. How do you work with an underrepresented community? And what place does community care have within the arts?

Marie-Anne Leuty

Hi, I’m Marie-Anne Leuty, Co-Founder of The Study Group Foundation and Editor in Chief of content platform The Quick + The Brave. UK-born with Réunionese roots, I moved to Amsterdam in 2015 looking for opportunity and adventure. Writing was something I gravitated to as a kid. As an adult, it’s given me the opportunity to carve a career via consumer, lifestyle, B2B and creative PR, freelance copywriting in a foreign country, landing a full-time tech job and now building a content platform.

I’ve worked on TQTB with my partner and fellow Co-Founder Obi Mgbado since 2018, first as a side project before focusing on it full time in 2020. All our content centres on culture, inclusivity, sustainability and self-care – I’m especially excited about what we can do to normalise rest in the community. There’s a lot we can do around community care.

As a BIPOC-founded organisation and platform, we understand how important representation in media is. We experience beautiful, complex, nuanced and challenging intersections as individuals from historically excluded communities. We need media that reflects our multifaceted experiences and uplifts our stories. We’re intentional about centring the experiences of racialised people, womxn and the LGBTQ+ community and that’s reflected in the team we’re building with.

Sumi Anjuman

Sumi Anjuman is a visual artist and activist born and raised in the northern region of Bangladesh. As a woman in an Islamic conservative society, she experiences the kind of oppression and agony that her work tackles forthrightly. Despite her socially-focused subject matter, her work is not straightforward-documentary; rather it feels more poetic, often verging on the abstract. Her collaborative methodology echoes the ideas of inclusivity while her photographs often invite the audience to be curious about what they see. As a result, they make a strong cerebral as well as an emotional impact on the observer. Parallelly, her works depict how subtle in approach can be as powerful as a political statement.

Sumi is currently based in the Netherlands, pursuing her master's degree in 'Photography & Society' at Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Afore, she graduated in 'Photography' from Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

ATD & Adyen

This lecture is in collaboration with Adyen. The company Adyen was founded in 2006, in the city center of Amsterdam, by a group of Dutch entrepreneurs. Adyen is a payments platform that processes for leading companies around the world. Currently, the organization has more than 2000 employees and 27 offices around the world. In 2021, Adyen opened additional office space at the Rokin, in the same city center where the companies’ journey began. To engage with, and give back to, the city of Amsterdam, the company opens up its offices for Amsterdammers in collaboration with the Academy of Theatre and Dance. Within its education, the academy explores the ways in which art can contribute to shaping the world, based on a firm belief that art can set people and realities in motion and has, for some time, wished to present themselves outside the university walls.

Lecture: Sunday May 15th 11.00h-13.00h. Location: Adyen office @ Rokin 49 Want to join? Please send an email before Thursday may 12th to dascreativeproducing@ahk.nl
