The Expanded Contemporary Dance programme welcomes passionate, open-minded students with an inquiring mind, from all cultural backgrounds, all dance and performance styles, and all parts of the world. Are you a skilled dancer wanting to develop to a professional level in the broad field of contemporary dance? Are you looking to deepen your understanding of your own moving body? Do you wish to expand your dance and performance vocabulary? Are you enthusiastic about exploring many artistic and cultural facets of dance performance? If your answer to these questions is ‘Yes’, sign up now for the auditions for admission to the 2022-2023 academic year.

There will be three phases of auditions for the Expanded Contemporary Dance programme. See below for all the information about each phase.

The audition panel is made up of Expanded Contemporary Dance teachers and guest artists. If you would like to know more about the panel members follow this link (online soon).

31 March and 1 April 2022

2 April 2022

Confirmation of jury’s final decision will be made by email, approximately 2 weeks after Selection Round 2.

Due to the ongoing wave of Omicron we, unfortunately, won't be able to hold live international pre- selections this year. We are happy that so many of you are interested in ECD. However, for safety reasons, we cannot host large numbers of people in our studios in Amsterdam. Therefore, all the international candidates, already registered people included, are invited to submit the pre-selection video.

The new deadline is 18 February 2022

Dutch and Netherlands-based candidates will receive new dates for the live pre-selection that will take place over several sessions in small groups.

We plan to keep 1st and 2nd rounds live.

Two options
To accommodate as many candidates as possible, we offer two options for the pre-selection round. You have the option to audition in Amsterdam or audition by video (your choice may be determined by your financial capacity, access to transport, etc).

In our studios at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam you will take part in:

- presentation of the two phrases
- presentations of free solos

Please note: for the live pre-selection you prepare the same assignments as the candidates of option 2 (see below). This means that you should know the phrases by heart from the start.

Two videos of required technical phrases (see links below) and one video of a free solo.

You will be asked to learn and reproduce two dance phrases on video, in the same way as you would reproduce a dance phrase given by a teacher in a dance class.
The only limitation for your solo is the duration: you have one (1) minute to show us anything that you feel represents you and your dancing.

See attached file (PDF) for a more detailed explanation of these tasks.

120 applicants (approx.) will be selected to take part in SELECTION ROUND 1.

SELECTIE-RONDE 1 – live in Amsterdam

Day 1: Creative process with a choreographer
Day 2: Technical dance classes and a physical theatre class

The creative process on Day 1 and the classes on Day 2 will be led by teachers from the Expanded Contemporary Dance programme and guest artists.

This phase takes two full days. The selection is made at the end of Day 2. Approximately 50 candidates will be invited to take part in the second and final selection round.

SELECTION ROUND 2 – live in Amsterdam

- Warm-up
-  Solos

-  Interviews

Final jury deliberation takes place at the end of this second round. The results will be announced in person to the candidates the same evening.

Within a week after SELECTION ROUND 2 you will receive an email informing you of whether you have been selected as one of the 22 students to enter the first year of Expanded Contemporary Dance. Attached to the email you will find a form which you should use to confirm your enrolment in the programme.
