The study
The four-year Dance in Education study at the Academy of Theatre and Dance is an internationally-oriented arts teacher training programme (Bachelor of Education). We train dance professionals, who provide dance education and supervise dance projects in a culturally diverse field of work.
Transcultural
The Dance in Education study programme has an extremely diverse student and teacher population, in terms of both their dance and cultural background. This creates a stimulating learning environment in which a fusion and intertwining of dance styles is natural.
The vision and guiding principles of the study programme are transcultural. Identity and culture emerge through interchange and interaction. In this study programme, you will examine a broad palette of Western and non-Western dance forms, dance traditions and target groups. Moreover, contemporary choreographers and dance teachers are a source of inspiration for the development of transcultural, artistic and inclusive dance practices.
The artistic field of work
The Dance in Education study programmes has good connections with cultuurprofielscholen (primary and secondary schools with a special focus on arts and culture), talent development tracks, senior secondary vocational (mbo) dance education, the community dance field of work and the professional performing arts field. We have built a robust network within the contemporary, intercultural, international field of work, and collaborate with the educational departments of, among others, Dance Theatre AYA, Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA) and contemporary dance company ICK Dans Amsterdam.
The study programme has a structural partnership with École des Sables, the International Centre for Traditional and Contemporary African Dances, in Senegal.
