Development & guidance
You will develop into a teacher, dancer and creator who approaches dance in a way that transcends styles. The basic training of the Dance in Education study programme consists of rhythmic-dynamic dance styles, as a result of which you will develop a ‘multifaceted body and multifaceted mind’. In the first two academic years, you will develop a cohesive artistic vision through artistic research and artistic projects with fellow students. In the final two academic years, you will subsequently work with dance enthusiasts in the extramural field of work as well.
Competencies
The professional competencies of the dance teacher are laid down nationally in five competency domains: artistiek, pedagogisch en didactisch, interpersoonlijk, omgevingsgericht en kritische reflectief (artistic, pedagogical and didactic, interpersonal, environment-oriented and critically reflective). You will develop the competencies within the five pillars of the curriculum.
A rhythmic-dynamic basic training in which students develop dance skills and stamina.
Development of movement and performance research. Special attention is devoted to African aesthetics in contemporary dance, urban experimental movement research, somatic movement, experiential anatomy, Laban Movement Analyses, and lighting, sound engineering and video technology.
Development of performance and choreographic skills. You will also devote attention to the production aspects of a piece of choreography or a programme.
Development of pedagogical and didactical skills, and vision in various community contexts, both intramural and extramural.
Development of research and writing skills. You will research (trans)cultural contexts and histories of dance and art, educational theory and didactics.
Free study opportunity and additional education
- Study guidance and personal development plan coaching
- Elective modules, including house, hip hop, Gaga technique and classical ballet.
- Individual (artistic) research
Internships
Internships occupy an important position within the study programme; an introduction to day-to-day practice and training as a teacher and dance maker are essential to the overall learning process. You will train as a teacher and dance maker in internal and external internships in the first and second years, and during external internships in the third year and graduation phase.
Guidance
Students are intensively supervised as with all dance programmes of the Academy of Theatre and Dance. A fixed hour for study guidance from a year mention is included in the timetable for all academic years. In addition, there is coaching in years two and three of the study programme. In this way, we ensure the student’s optimal study progress.
