Nita Liem

Nita Liem,born in 1962 in Indonesia studied dance at the Theaterschool in Amsterdam. Since 1986 she became intrigued by hip hop dancers and followed their development closely. From 1992 to 2000 she developed into a physically oriented theater maker, who learned to give form and movement to young people who 'from home' were more likely to be on the streets than to visit a theater for any reason.
Nita gives guest lectures at home and abroad. Has been affiliated with dance theater Don't Hit Mama since 2000 as a creator and member of the artistic staff, in that capacity also 'artist in residence' at the Amsterdam School of the Arts in 2008.
Don´t Hit Mama draws inspiration from the reality of people in big cities and their often uninhibited and capricious lifestyle. Attitude and mentality play a major role. Just like the beat of the Afro-American dance traditions. Dance theater Don´t Hit Mama shows what moves people and how they move. Attitude and mentality play a major role. The work of Don´t Hit Mama revolves around celebration, dance and awareness. We work with young performers and experienced artists and with international inspirations.
In 2021, Don't Hit Mama stopped producing and working as a talent developer in order to continue with its own.
