History DAS Theatre

DAS Theatre was previously named DasArts – Master of Theatre. This institute was founded in 1994 by Ritsaert ten Cate, director of DasArts until 2000. Ritsaert ten Cate's successor was Alida Neslo, who was the director of DasArts until 2003. From 2004 until 2007 Moniek Toebosch was the director of the institution. Since 1 June 2009 Barbara Van Lindt is the Artistic Director.

DasArts operated as an independant foundation in association with the Amsterdam University of the Arts until 2008. In 2009 DasArts became part of the Academy of Theatre and Dance, the theatre faculty of the Amsterdam University of the Arts. The two Master’s study programmes of the Academy of Theatre and Dance, DasArts and Amsterdam Master of Choreography, and the Performing Arts in Transition research group have joined forces in 2016. They not only share one building in the Grootlab in Amsterdam-Noord, they also move forward together under one name: DAS Graduate School.

The master study programmes are henceforth called DAS Theatre and DAS Choreography and the Performing Arts in Transition research group of the Academy of Theatre and Dance is named DAS Research. They are situated in new premises at the former Shell Grootlab in Amsterdam North. This striking building is located on the banks of the IJ opposite Amsterdam’s central station.
