Manifestations of Exhaustion

Looking to engage with the topic of exhaustion (in a bio-psycho-social dimension) and with Theatre departments of the ATD, H&P started this partnership with the Regie Department through the 2023-24 school year.

Around the ATD and across multiple departments we hear and observe that people are fatigued and overwhelmed. This comes from students, teachers and managers. The concept of fatigue as a feeling is subjective and can have multiple causes.

Trying to make a meaningful start in addressing this systemic issue we propose to evaluate and describe the general sensation of exhaustion. To start doing so, we propose looking at traits that reflect exhaustion differently:

  • Physical - voluntary exhalation capacity
  • Cognitive - working memory
  • Emotional - stress

This is a prospective pilot where we will observe the behaviour of the variables through the school year and reflect on its variation against the curriculum content, load, demands and the ATD general demands. We are curious to extrapolate connections but also gage the suitability of the metrics selected. Results found will be shared and finally reflected upon together with the student population and will guide 2024-25 activities, initiatives and behaviours.

Specific goals of the current pilot are:
- Transcending: what can H&P mean for theater departments (regie), how do cognitive, physical and emotional components work together in matters like stress and workload within the academy?
- For the directing student personally: what does exhaustion and workload mean for you?
- For the future work practice of directing studies: how can you apply the acquired knowledge in your rehearsal process personally and within managing a team?

1st Mondays:
Regie students will be given and education seminar on each of the variables being measured. These take place in the first Mondays after school breaks and serve to give students information on the impact of the metric in their perception of exhaustion but also tool to manage it personally and within groups.
