Hypermobility

In May 2011, at the request of the Amsterdam School of Health Professions, a study into hypermobility has been done, in which students from the dance academies of the Academy of Theater and Dance took part.

The research question was:
"What are the consequences of flexibility among young adult dancers for the experienced complaints (pain, fatigue), physical fitness (muscle strength, condition, functional walking distance) and psychological burden (depression, anxiety) in comparison to non-dancers of the same age."

It is currently unknown why one person develops complaints and the other person does not. To get an answer to this, there has been a hypermobility study in collaboration with the Academy of Theater and Dance. The participating students answered many questions with regard to the main-question and they also did several physical tests. Interesting data came through which is another step forward into further understanding of the origin of HMS, but also the development of measuring instruments to be able to screen more efficiently who has or has not an increased risk of developing HMS. And, last but not least, create more social understanding for this group of individuals. The data have also raised new questions that asks for further investigation. For the Academy of Theater and Dance, this can mean that the data provide predictive insight into failure rates, complaints development, and method of supervision.

This research will be continued with the anonymous results of the functional screening measurements in the introduction week of the hbo dance programs.
