A Conversation with Banu Cennetoğlu

January 28th at 7pm at ATD Grootlab, Overhoeksplein 2 - 1031, 2nd Floor.

Aesthetics of the Political is a project by Samah Hijawi of intimate conversations with artists about how they respond to political subject matters in their work. In light of the charged events instigated from the on-going genocide the last year, the role of the artist, the cultural and educational institutions has been under heated debate.

In response, artist and DAS Theatre tutor Samah Hijawi is hosting a series of talks in the coming months with different practitioners on how their work has been affected by these highly charged times. The first conversation with Banu Cennetoğlu will take her work right? (2022-) based on the Declaration of Human Rights, as a starting point to discuss how she approaches her artistic projects, and how she tries to maintain a clear political position in her work in a highly charged and politicised world.

Banu Cennetoğlu is an Istanbul-based artist engaged in a wide range of cross-disciplinary practices. Her practice incorporates methods of archiving in order to question and challenge the politics of memory, as well as the production, distribution and consumption of information. Cennetoğlu had solo exhibitions at institutions including Sylvia Kouvali, Athens; Void, Derry; K21 Ständehaus, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf; Sculpture Center, New York; Chisenhale Gallery, London; Bonner Kunstverein; Salonul de proiecte, Bucharest; Kunsthalle Basel. Along many group shows, she has participated in the Berlin, Istanbul, Liverpool, Gwangju, Athens and Venice Biennials, as well as Manifesta 8, Murcia; documenta14, Athens/Kassel and 58th Carnegie International, Pittsburg.

She is the founder of BAS, an, artist-run space in Istanbul dedicated to artists’ books and printed matter. Cennetoğlu is currently an advisor at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam.

The talk will be in English, about an hour include questions from the audience. A warm soup and some snacks will be served to keep the conviviality.
