Priced Out: The impact of tuition fee rise on Dutch Art Education - and beyond

A crisis is unfolding in the ‘international’ status of Dutch art education which demands the attention and action of all. A tremendous rise in tuition fees for international non-EU/EER students in the Universities of the Arts in the Netherlands has happened over the last few years. This does not match the precarious conditions of living as a student and as an artist in a country with limited access to (student) housing, scholarships and funding. We, people working and studying at or with those universities, are now facing the consequences of limited access to art education in the international scope and are deeply concerned about the political, ideological, cultural and socioeconomic messages it communicates.

What are the consequences for the future of the arts and art education in the Netherlands that tuition fees – especially for non-EU/EER students – have been increased so radically? What can we do together to respond to and change this situation? Where can we find possible solutions?

On Tuesday 10th October (17:30-19:00hrs), the participation council of DAS Graduate School and the ATD Lectorate will organize a public forum that aims to start raising awareness over this matter, and discuss the consequences of the tuition fee rise. The forum will also support exchange of existing practical strategies  and responses that have been put into action at  different (art) universities in the country. For the event we will be joined by a panel of guests with different knowledge on these topics to make short opening statements, which will then be followed by group discussion.
