HEAVY WEIGHT HOLDING BODY
In “Heavy Weight Holding Body”, a site-specific dance performance, Karol Tymiński cruises the city, exploring the intimate affinity between a human being and the surrounding architecture, rendering visible the latent erotism and its pulsations. His dance is a perpetual negotiation between one’s own desires and what is welcomed in public spaces. At the risk of being exposed, he moves on the brink of culturally imposed norms in a cross-matter sexual encounter. As the dance unfolds, Tymiński not only perverts the dominant understanding of sexuality and its presence in the public sphere but also leads the audience towards the experience of the vibrancy of urban structures.
Unsuspecting passersby temporarily join the choreography, while the audience looks on as voyeurs from a distance that keeps them hidden in plain sight, listening simultaneously to the voice of Tymiński that reaches them through headphones - creating complicity, a secret alliance into a parallel state.
Karol Tymiński is a Polish choreographer and performer based in Berlin. He is a graduate of Warsaw BalletSchool and the P.A.R.T.S. program in Brussels. He is also a co-founder of Center in Motion Choreographers Workspace in Warsaw. Tymiński choreographies, oscillating between dance and performance, are “brutalist”. The term which Tymiński takes from the architectural style relates to his explorations around constructing choreographies which recognize the human body rather as a thing instead of a fully realized individual. The “objectification” of the human body Tymiński understands as means of accessing ones physicality in altered manner. Similarly as the brutalist architecture exposes the construction materials and the functionality of the building Tymiński dissects the performers body in order to expose its materiality and workings. The performer, fluctuating between dance and labour, is often facing ones own limits, which broken-through expose one onto the limitless possibilities of being otherwise, outside of the culturally imposed idea of the self.
Tymiński's recognition of the human body as a “thing” has led him towards new explorations, in which it is not the rapture within oneself but the integration of the human in the agglomerate of things, or rather dissolving one into the ecology of matter, as means of questioning the self. The notion of cross-matter eroticism, which the artist is at present developing, is a result of taking that path what can be seen in his recent works such as “Harbor” (2020) - a solo concert which focuses on sensorial, not acoustic, experience of music vibrations or “Water Sports” (2020) - a group piece which speaks of romantic and sexual relation with the ocean in time of cataclysm. Currently Tymiński investigates eroticism of architecture, results of which will be seen in his new work, under working title “What is the matter”, to be presented this year as a site specific performance in Berlin.
