IDlab Open Studio - ID.OS EO4: Michele Rizzo (Dance/Club Culture) 5 February 2019

Published on

In the new series ID.OS - IDlab Open Studio - progressive artists present their innovative interdisciplinary practice. From electronic music to video games, and from music videos to Instagram documentaries. How does that creative process proceed: from idea, to design, to the finished result? What role do the internet and social networks play? And how can you work together effectively?

In this fourth edition we welcome choreographer and multidisciplinary artist Michele Rizzo. Trained in visual arts as well as dance, Rizzo makes performance works that explore processes of transformation and transcendence. HIGHER xtn., an adaptation of his 2015 performance HIGHER, is currently on view at the Stedelijk Museum, as part of Municipal Art Acquisitions exhibition Freedom of Movement. HIGHER xtn explores the power of dance by focusing on the nightclub as a site of community building and radical self-expression.

Michele Rizzo graduated in 2011 at the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam, where he is now a guest teacher in choreography and movement research, and in 2015 at the Sandberg Instituut of Amsterdam, in the Dirty Art Department masters programme. In 2015, he created HIGHER, produced by Frascati theatre in collaboration with ICK, a project inspired by club culture, for which he collaborated with music producer Lorenzo Senni.

Taking as well the shape of a workshop, the HIGHER project has been widely shown through out Europe during the past two years (Urb Helsinki, Rencontre internationals de dans de Seine Saint Denis Paris, La Briqueterie Paris, Santarcangelo festival, Short theater Rome, DDD Porto, de Warned Turnhout, Triennale at CRT Milan, and as workshop in Impulstanz Vienna).

His last work SPACEWALK produced by Frascati theatre and AFK, and coproduced by Dansmakers Amsterdam, Ick Amsterdam and Campo (Be) deals still with notion of clubbing and trance in conjunction with the realm of virtual space and virtual architecture.
