Decentralizing Dramaturgy
"The structure we use to build our societies, and the structure we use to shape our stories, are one and the same.”. (Chantal Bilodeau)
Two years ago I started researching non-Aristotelian/ eurocentric dramaturgy. The urge to research this was because of the diversity of theatre makers/ artists I collaborated with as a dramaturg. And the need to develop knowledge and tools to support this group in creating counter narratives and structures that empower those narratives. During my research I encountered the essay of dramaturg Katalin Trenscenyi about heterarchical dramaturgies. She uses Hindu myth “Indira’s web” to describe those kinds of dramaturgies: multiple, interconnected worldviews or perspectives that coexist and reflect each other. My research is about meeting and interacting with those heterarchical dramaturgies as a way to decentralize the dominant dramaturgy. Also as way to re-evaluate the way we structure (our) stories in a social-political context.
At this moment I am working on preparing a floor research based on the question:
"To what extent can we translate the structure of Kawina music into a theatrical piece where the complexity of a subject is felt not only in language but also in dramaturgy?"
