Producing the Future: Citizens by Act

Citizenship is one of the most prominent institutions of our times. At the same time, citizenship is an ambivalent form of identification, and it is not always easy to define who is, and who may be, a citizen. Thinking about citizenship raises questions of belonging and questions of rights. What makes it possible to belong and to claim rights?

This lecture by Marie Beauchamps will address these issues based on Engin Isin’s theory of Acts of Citizenship, in which being a citizen is understood beyond formal state membership. Here, citizenship becomes an active and reactive political way of being with others, where acts of citizenship disrupt socio-historical patterns. The lecture will focus on the historical case of Olympe de Gouges, a writer and feminist during the French Revolution of 1789, whose creative work made her a citizen by act.

The lecture will be followed by a viewing of Aylin Kuryel's documentary "Image Acts", followed by a discussion with the maker.
