Three host organizations – DasArts (which will take a group to the Berlin Biennale), the Brussels Kunstenfestivaldesarts and the Göteborgs Dans & Teater Festival – have invited thirty young performing artists to participate in working visits in May 2012. DasArts and the festivals have joined forces, and generously shared their previous experiences, to invent a format for encounter and discussion. Each working visit will conclude with a public presentation.

The participants include DasArts students, several artists based in Sweden from the Göteborg Festival network, a selection of artists from other continents and artists from the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (KFDA) network in Brussels. They were asked to choose a city, an event or a theme. A different key element of artistic working life will be explored in each city: politics, practice or feedback. These key elements will serve as themes for the encounters, discussions and practical exercises undertaken within the groups, and for the dialogue with the artists whose work the participants will see. Experts on the topics, drawn from the DasArts educational environment, will guide each visit.

Working visit to the Berlin Biennale (7th – 13th of May)

Curator, dramaturge and artistic director Florian Malzacher will guide the working visit to the Berlin Biennale. The theme is the relationship between art and politics. The 7th Berlin Biennale doesn’t commission artists for art projects, but for a political shift. In addition to the regular Biennale program, the visiting artists will also engage with projects by Pawe? Althamer, Teatr.doc, Árpád Schilling and Yael Bartana. The participants will be asked to decide where they stand. Discussions with artists and curators will therefore focus on questions such as: what is the role of art, not just the art that can be seen and experienced in Berlin, but also your own work? How do you position yourself as an artist, and as a citizen? What artistic strategies are there in politics, and which political strategies exist within art? By which criteria can these be judged? Are there any (new?) ways of bridging the gap between arts and politics?

The participants will have a public moment as active participants in Yael Bartana’s International Congress of the Jewish Renaissance Movement in Poland (JRMiP). This takes place on 11th of May at Hebbel am Ufer 1, Stresemanstrasse 29, Berlin between 15:30 and 22:30.

Working visit to the Brussels Kunstenfestivaldesarts (KDFA) (12th – 18th of May)
Performance artist Siegmar Zacharias will guide the working visit to Brussels Kunstenfestivaldesarts. The subject is the notion of practice. The participants will pursue the relationship between product, process and practice. Questions they will address include: every artist develops an artistic practice, what do you do when working? In order to be able to work, what conditions do you need? How do you create them? When we talk about work, what language do we use? The participants will meet festival artists and also engage in the collective practice of ‘conversation pieces’. Their conversation openers will be their individual practice and the festival performances they attend.

The participants will have a public moment when they perform a conversation piece with, or for, the public in which they share their collective research and put it into practice. This will take place on 18th of May at 18:30 at the KDFA Festival Centre, Schildknaapstraat 50, Brussels.

Working visit to Göteborgs Dans & Teater Festival (20th – 26th of May)
Philosopher Karim Benammar will guide the working visit toGöteborgs Dans & Teater Festival. Over six days, the participants will explore the role and culture of feedback. Artists constantly give and receive feedback in the form of questions, remarks, impressions, suggestions and criticism. During the working visit participants will explore how collective feedback works. Important questions include: how can you turn feedback into a constructive learning experience? Do the responses to one particular presentation have the potential to be a group learning experience? How can we avoid taking criticism personally? The participants will work on these questions in relation to the different feedback techniques they will learn during the week. As the participants get better at giving and receiving feedback, they will also integrate elements from their shared experiences of the festival.

The participants conclude the visit with a public presentation on feedback, which might be seen as a form of performance, on the 26th of May at 11:00 in the Lagerhuset on the Heurlins plats 1, Göteborg.
