Nita Liem, theatre maker and artistic director of Don’t Hit Mama dance company, became the Artist in Residence (AIR) at the Amsterdam School of the Arts for the 2007-2008 academic year at the invitation of the Bachelor of Dance in Education. Her goals as AIR were to provide a refreshing look at the role of urban dance and diversity in the contemporary landscape and to challenge current approaches to dance education. Move in the Modern World is the record of an intense collaboration with students, teachers, professionals and international guests. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at both Liem’s teaching method and the dialogue with American dance scholar Sally Sommer and Nigerian performer and researcher Funmi Adewole. As well as presenting some of the fruits of a unique encounter, this documentary also gives an impression of the discussions that took place and provides insights into Nita Liem’s motivations as Artist in Residence. And, last but not least, it attests to the crucial developments taking place in dance cultures in the modern world!
