RIZE (2005)
David LaChapelle
Between 2002 and 2004, fashion photographer and music video director David LaChapelle filmed “krumping” and “clowning” in the notorious South Central Los Angeles neighbourhood. These are hyper-energetic hip-hop dance forms, in which combat clown mime and wild African tribal dance meet.
The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (1994)
Stephan Elliott
The motto of the disco hit “I Will Survive” fits perfectly with the attitude to life of the three drag queens who, in Stephan Elliott's hilarious 1994 road movie, drive through the Australian outback in their bus (named Priscilla) on their way to a performance in a tourist resort. Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp play these divas, with Stamp in particular stealing the show as Bernadette with his chic, calm demeanour (even in the most bizarre clothes) and his wicked remarks. When a loud country woman challenges him/her in a bar, she receives the following advice: 'Why don't you light your tampon and blow your box apart, because it's likely the only bang you'll ever get, sweetheart.'
Casablanca (1943)
Michael Curtiz
Three-time Oscar winner Casablanca is still considered one of the best films ever made. But in 1942, no one, including the cast and crew, expected anything from the project, which had a low budget and an unfinished script. Ingrid Bergman complained until the end that she was frustrated that she was not told which man her character was supposed to fall in love with. Rick Blaine (Bogart), the hard-drinking bar owner in Nazi-occupied Casablanca? Or Victor Laszlo (Henreid), the French resistance hero? Bergman's despair proves to be a strength in the story about choices, love, romance, politics, freedom and heroism in a twilight world.
Does it stand the test of time, you can be the judge of that.
I’m Your Venus (2025)
Kimberly Reed
A moving documentary about the unsolved murder of Venus Xtravaganza, star of the legendary film Paris Is Burning. Venus' two families—her biological family and her ballroom family—come together to seek answers and celebrate her legacy.
After a hesitant start, the two families come together to posthumously honour her personality, her name, and her importance.
No Other Land (2024)
English subtitles - Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal
No Other Land follows Basel Adra, a young Palestinian activist who has been fighting against the mass expulsion of his community by the Israeli authorities since his childhood. He documents the destruction of villages in his region, where Israeli soldiers are gradually demolishing houses and expelling residents. At one point, he meets Yuval, an Israeli journalist, and an unlikely friendship develops between them. Although Yuval supports Basel in his efforts, their bond is strained by the enormous inequality: Basel lives under military occupation, while Yuval lives freely and without restrictions.
We would like to point out that this documentary can get under your skin as it touches a current and intense (political) world situation. If you would like to discuss it afterwards, please let us know. Take care of each other.
PINA BAUSCH (2011)
Wim Wenders
A tribute to the late German choreographer Pina Bausch, as her dancers perform her most famous creations.
