Amidst the sun and rain, the rooftop garden is thriving - overgrowing the beds in fabulous pinks and blues, oranges and yellows. It’s a joy to be around the plants - especially as we are witnessing the genocide in Gaza, amidst the struggle and protests, we need to remind ourselves of the transformative power of our plant friends for community building and the possibility of healing. To offer a sweet moment of community care, we hereby warmly invite you to the last garden gathering before the summer break: Summer Solstice - solar power!
As the longest day of the year is approaching, we gather for our second Summer Solstice Celebration! The summer solstice is a celebration of the sun, light, and the power of photosynthesis. For this, we have invited our resident herbalist Pip Steinkamp to host the second plant magic: herbalism workshop. We will be working with the gorgeous, sun-charged, yellow flowers of St. John’s wort, which is traditionally harvested around the Solstice. Pip will teach us about the medicinal properties of St. John’s wort, which - among other things - is a natural antidepressant and guides us through the process of making a tincture to take home.
We will also channel the transformative power of sunlight through making a collective Cyanotype fabric print: an early form of photography, using sunlight and plants from the rooftop to make a beautiful blue print. Let’s all soak up the sunlight on this solstice!
After the two-part workshop, we will be celebrating the solstice with having a delicious dinner together, with rooftop salad and other self-made treats.
We are so excited to welcome you in the garden above the school on Thursday, the 20th of June, at 18:00-21:00. Bring your friends, bring some flowers, and celebrate the solstice in community.
